A visit to the museum can be combined with a visit to Antkabir, Atatürks mausoleum, which was built as a national shrine to the man who shaped the secular Republic of Turkey, changing and modernizing virtually every aspect of life from language to the legal system.
There are many places of anthropological and historical interest in the surrounding area, which are easily reached on a day trip. Well worth a visit is Hattua, the capital of the Hittite Empire, which is one of Turkey's earliest known cities, founded in 1375 BC. Also of interest are the rock tombs of the Pontic kings at Amasya, and Safranbolu a typical Ottoman town with its wooden houses still almost completely intact. Due to its position as state capital, Ankara has become a cultural centre, home to theatres and the impressive art decor National Opera House.
